What is PPM?
Planned preventative maintenance (PPM), also known as scheduled maintenance or simply preventative maintenance, helps to keep your whole operation running smoothly, preventing downtime and ensuring employee safety.
PPM inspections can either be time-based (so every 2 weeks) or usage-based (after a certain amount of kilometres, hours, or production cycles). Regularly performed maintenance on a piece of equipment, from forklifts to coffee machines, can lessen the likelihood of it failing, and even identify regular problematic areas to improve.
Benefits of PPM
Increase longevity of equipment: By ensuring every aspect of your daily operation is running smoothly, it not only avoids costly downtime and errors but also makes sure your well-oiled machinery stays that way for longer periods.
Minimise errors and downtime: Sometimes, a millimetre error can mean a whole product recall and a delay whilst getting everything perfect again. Planned preventative maintenance can highlight issues before they become a real problem.
Reduction of overhead costs: Businesses save money by avoiding emergency repair call out charges, part of full replacement expenditure, and can actually lead to an increase of productivity, secure in the knowledge everything is ship-shaped and avoid any large scale repairs.
Increased workplace safety and easier scheduling: A top issue in manufacturing is workplace safety, not only with making the workplace COVID Secure, but employees will be secure in the knowledge their equipment is working to the highest standard possible. Regular planned maintenance is also a better use of engineers time, with less disruption to the entire workforce.
Barriers to implementing preventive maintenance
At some level, each business will have a maintenance schedule, however, PPM takes a business from reactive, often disruptive, interventions to uniform routine inspections. This may involve an initial cost, either from a headcount perspective or equipment, such as audit or issue reporting software. However, whilst initial investment may be a consideration, emergency repairs, call out charges and fall in productivity, are not only unpredictable but can be costly in the long term.
